 The Third International Workshop and Conference on Human Rights and Multiculturalism to be held in Hong Kong on December 3-5, 2013 is proceeding smoothly. On the evening of December 2, there will also be an opening ceremony of the Bioethics Art Competition where winners will be exhibited.
There will be two evenings that is open to the public to have greater local impact, with the topic focusing on Human Rights and the Family. On the evening of December 2, there will be a public forum in Cantonese which will address the meaning and importance of family in the context of human rights by the major religious representatives in Hong Kong: Buddhists, Catholics, Confucians, Daoists, Muslims and Protestants. Public authorities from the Hong Kong Family Council and Equal Opportunities Commission will be invited as guest of honor for the opening ceremony. The second public conference will be held on the evening of December 4, 2013, on the topics of: Human Rights and the Human Family and Human Rights and the Relational Self.
For cultural enrichment, during the workshop the participants will get to visit Chi Lin Buddhist Temple and adjacent Rock garden After the workshop, there will be a free day with city tour of Hong Kong, visiting Tsim Sha Tsui harbour view, Museum of Art and collection, take ferry across to the busy Central business district, walk up the world’s longest outdoor escalator, visit the Catholic Cathedral, cross over the Botanical Garden to take the world’s steepest tram to the Peak to have lunch. Then return to visit the aviary of the Hong Kong Park, take the MTR to visit the Mong Kwok market in the afternoon with lots of sightseeing and shopping opportunities.
In addition, as a part of cultural enrichment, a side trip to China has been organized one week before the workshop (November 25- December 1, 2013) visiting Nanjing, Shanghai, Huangshan, Hangzhou, and Qiandaohu. The cost would be around €750 + visa fee. Those who are interested please contact

Dominique J. Monlezun, UNESCO Chair Director for Medical Student Research, led his research team’s poster presentation at the International Neuroethics Society (INS) Annual Meeting this past October 2012 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Monlezun´s team articulated an innovative “Neuroeconomic Personalism” at the INS meeting as a development of his recent presentation “Neuroeconomics-Virtue Model as Novel Clinical Ethics Common Ground” in Sao Paulo, Brazil, during the 8th International Conference on Clinical Ethics and Consultation in May 2012.
The poster “Neuroeconomic Personalism: Policy Implications for Compulsory Neuroenchancement in Reproductive Choices” shows an intriguing synthesis of neurological, political and metaphysical reflection. The poster expresses reflections Monlezun has developed regarding the need to complement John Rawl´s analysis of 20th century pluralist societies with the philosophic anthropology Karol Wojtyla.

 The XXXIII Meeting of the Group of Neurobioethics held a seminar on Friday, December 14, 2012 to address the theme “Mind and Consciousness: phenomenology, neuroscience and psychotherapy” n collaboration with STOQ (Science Theology and the Ontological Quest), the Regina Apostolorum Faculty of Philosophy and the Regina Apostolorum Department of Bioethics. In his introduction to the seminar, Dr. Alberto Carrara, LC, explained that the theme is based on two texts: the first, entitled "... and Consciousness? Phenomenology, Psycho-pathology, and Neuroscience" by the first two speakers, Professor Angela Ales Bello and Professor Patricia Manganaro; the second text, “Imagination: care and creativity,” by the third speaker, Dr. Alberto Passerini. In her presentation entitled “Consciousness between Phenomenology and Sciences,” Professor Ales Bello stressed the openness of neuroscience to phenomenology, while noting the importance of maintaining the distinction between the competencies and methods of the two fields of study. The bridge between phenomenology and neuroscience is located in a deep analysis of human experiences. This approach can be situated in an anthropology that respects human duality without becoming dualistic in the reductionist sense. In such anthropology, the human brain is not reduced to the sole source of human nature and its unique properties, but is nonetheless recognized as an authentic "base" of human nature´s expression.

UNESCO Chair Director awards mother for heroic embodiment of respect for vulnerable life at Rome art foundation event
Alberto Garcia, Director of the UNESCO Chair of Bioethics and Human Rights, presented an award to Maria Grazia, loving mother of a daughter in vegetative state, for her heroic testimony of respect for vulnerable human life at the recent Fondazione Marianna event in Rome, Italy November 2012.
Garcia spoke of Maria Grazia has embodied article 8 of UNESCO´s Universal Declaration of Human Rights through her sacrificial devotion to her daughter Maria Angela, whose vegetative state has demanded full-time attention for more than 16 years. On behalf of the UNESCO Chair, Garcia recognized that respect for the vulnerable is not a mere abstract concept, but rather a life-changing value that Maria Grazia´s example challenges each of us to incarnate in our daily actions.
An audience of nearly 200 persons joined a renowned panel of artistic, municipal, and intellectual leaders in the Eternal City to celebrate Maria Grazia´s witness and welcome the foundation´s 15th annual calendar (click here to view the calendars).

2013 Bioethics Art Competition
It’s time to start cleaning your brushes and getting ready for the 2nd annual Bioethics Art Competition! Artists from all over the world will be creating pieces of art that transmit this year’s theme:
“Create an image, with respect for all cultures and religions that speaks to
the impact of life sciences for present and future generations
~ illustrate love, compassion, and care.”
Have you been waiting for the chance to express your beliefs on the dignity of human life through your art and creativity? Through this competition artists are given the opportunity to express and voice their ethical message at an international level.
Applicants may submit artwork in some of the 3 categories: fine art, photography, and student art (ages 13 – 17).
A prize will be awarded to the winning artists:
- Fine Art: $5,000 Best of Show and $500 to 4 additional winners
- Photography: $5,000 Best of Show and $500 to 4 additional winners
- Student: $1.000 Best of Show and $100 to 4 additional winners
The winning pieces will be exhibited in New York (at the United Nations headquarters), in Rome (at Regina Apostolorum Athenaeum) and during the UNESCO Multicultural and Religion Conference in Hong Kong, December 3–5, 2013.
The deadline for applications is: May 1, 2013 for the fine art and photography categories and July 1, 2013 for the “student art” category.

 Some of the papers presented at the Second International Bioethics, Multiculturalism and Religion Workshop and Conference on Human Vulnerability, held in Rome, Italy, October 9-11, 2011, are now published in the bioethics journal Studia Bioethica of the School of Bioethics of the Ateneo Pontificio Regina Apostolorum. Studia Bioethica is published every trimester with articles and other contributions on bioethics and ethical analysis of biomedical and biolegal topics. To read the articles which are free, one must register to enter the site. The complete set of papers will eventually be published in a volume, which is now under the review of publisher Springer.
 Our UNESCO Chair Fellow, Fr. Joseph Tham, recently edited a volume with the Hong Kong Journal of Catholic Studies on the topic of “Science and Faith.” This yearly journal is published under the Department of Religious Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This publication is dedicated to the thorny question of the relationship between science and faith. While science and religion were one-time partners, they are now perceived as competitors with frequent clashes at the ethical and ideological levels. Looking at the articles contained in this journal, readers will get a glimpse of the immensity and complexity of issues confronting science and faith. The contributions highlight the historical relationship between faith and science, the methodological questions regarding how these two disciplines interact, and whether faith can say something useful to science and vice versa. This December, the UNESCO Chair of Bioethics and Human Rights will join The Mexican National Academy of Bioethics and to host the VIII International Congress on the clinical practice of bioethics in the Anahuac University of the North of Mexico City (download the informational flyer here).
Leading experts will gather to discuss the changing conceptions of human r ights, aging, responsibility for future generations, animal protection, global justice, environmental ethics, health car, poverty, and vulnerability.
Special attention will be given to a thoughtful analysis and evaluation of texts guiding the country´s approach to bioethics.
The congress will draw upon a widerange of participants to ensure the interdisciplanry approach essential to address complex bioethical issues at a national and international level.

Executive summary
 Some of the outcomes and results related to our objective of promoting an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation on bioethics and human rights are the following:
- Improvement of communication regarding the project of the UNESCO Chair, its mission, and its activities within the organization and to the public (using our internet site: www.unescobiochair.org, periodical newsletters)
- Design, launching and consolidation of some academic programs and activities in collaboration with our UNITWIN partners in Mexico and Angola.
- Consolidation of Neurobioethics Research Group (ongoing monthly meetings and first accredited Educational Program -Summer Course 2012-)
- Creation an consolidation of a forum of diverse bioethics thoughts leaders through the organization of our 2st International Workshop on Human Vulnerability (Oct 2011) delivering a framework to guide the application of bioethical principles. Involvement of Asian academic institutions through the preparation of 2nd Workshop on Bioethics, Multiculturalims and Religion (Dic 2013)
- Innovative involvement of artistic community in bioethics issues through the organization of our 1st International Bioethics Art Competition on Human Vulnerabilty (Sep-Oct 2011) and consolidation by organizing 2nd edition of the competition.
- Increased interest and involvement of new scholars and students from our host institutions (UER-APRA) some of them volunteering as fellows and interns, making possible consolidation and development of our activities.
