UNESCO Chair Promotes new Bioethics Diploma in Mexico

The School of Medicine of the Anahuac University of Mayab in Mexico was recently proud to announce its new Diploma in Bioethics in cooperation with the Rome-based UNESCO Chair of Bioethics and Human Rights.

The course, beginning in November 2012, offers a bioethics program unique to the southeast of Mexico and is the first fruit of a new partnership with UNESCO Chair. The 100-hour intensive course introduces students to the chief bioethical issues that will empower professionals to apply sound ethical judgments in fields as diverse as Medicine, Psychology, Dentistry, Nursing, Nutrition, Social Work and Family Sciences.

The main topics of the course are as follows:

  1. Fundamentals of Bioethics
  2. Bioethics and Sexuality
  3. Bioethics and the Beginning of Life
  4. Current Themes of Bioethics
  5. Bioethics and End of Life Issues

UNESCO Chair Director, Dr. Alberto García Gómez, noted that this diploma is especially relevant to those who seek to uphold the dignity of the human being in a world of in which scientific experimentation with human embryos and cloning are no longer merely the subjects of science fiction.

Drs. Eguiluz Manuel Echeverria, director of the School of Medicine and Eduardo Espinosa Macin, graduate coordinator of the same school, together with Prof. Achach Marisol Solis, coordinator of the Office of International Relations at the Anahuac Mayab, worked to ensure that the program would be associated with the Rome-based Chair, one of the 13 UNESCO chairs in the world devoted to Bioethics.UAP_bioethics

The UNESCO Chair has actively promoted similar diploma programs in Mexico City, Houston, Texas and Luanda, Angola. The Chair has also sponsored intensive summer courses, such as the 2012 program ¨Neurobioethics: The Human Person at the center of Neuroscience, Ethics, Law and Society¨held in Rome.

UNESCO Chair joins Mexico´s National Academy of Bioethics to hold 8th Annual International Congress on Clinic Practice of Bioethics

This December, the UNESCO Chair of Bioethics and Human Rights will join The Mexican National Academy of Bioethics and to host the VIII International Congress on the clinical practice of bioethics in the Anahuac University of the North of Mexico City.

Leading experts will gather to discuss the changing conceptions of human rights, aging, responsibility for future generations, animal protection, global justice, environmental ethics, health car, poverty, and vulnerability.

Special attention will be given to a thoughtful analysis and evaluation of texts guiding the country´s approach to bioethics.

The congress will draw upon a wide range of participants to ensure the interdisciplinary approach essential to address complex bioethical issues at a national and international level.

Annual Report of 2011-2012

Executive summary

Some of the outcomes and results related to our objective of promoting an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation on bioethics and human rights are the following:

  • Improvement of communication regarding the project of the UNESCO Chair, its mission, and its activities within the organization and to the public (using our internet site: www.unescobiochair.org,  periodical newsletters)
  • Design, launching and consolidation of some academic programs and activities in collaboration with our UNITWIN partners in Mexico and Angola.
  • Consolidation of Neurobioethics Research Group (ongoing monthly meetings and first accredited Educational Program -Summer Course 2012-)
  • Creation an consolidation of a forum of diverse bioethics thoughts leaders through the organization of our 2st International Workshop on Human Vulnerability (Oct 2011) delivering a framework to guide the application of bioethical principles. Involvement of Asian academic institutions through the preparation of 2nd Workshop on Bioethics, Multiculturalims and Religion (Dic 2013)
  • Innovative involvement of artistic community in bioethics issues through the organization of our 1st International Bioethics Art Competition on Human Vulnerabilty (Sep-Oct 2011) and consolidation by organizing 2nd edition of the competition.
  • Increased interest and involvement of new scholars and students from our host institutions (UER-APRA) some of them volunteering as fellows and interns, making possible consolidation and development of our activities.
